My Super Bowl party is kind of a bust. I wanted a small crowd of people, so I invited only 4 others. Due to the storm and other situations, only my brother is here with me. We are drinking and feasting right now while cranking tunes. Can't wait for the game to start.

So far the game is turning out to be a grind it out affair rather than the gunslinging game everyone expected it to be. It's still a great game even if the Saints blew their one great chance at a touchdown just now.

Damn fine game. How ballsy is it to onside kick coming out of halftime? I hope this loss quells all that blasphemous talk about Peyton being the greatest QB of all time (as a Niners fan, of course it's Joe Montana).

I really wish I could have been on Bourbon Street for the celebration. That looked like one hell of a party.

That was classic.
Much better than the final score indicates.
I was rooting for overtime.
The more aggressive coach won.
I wanted to see the Colts do something at the end of the first half.
I realize most teams in the same situation let the clock run down---I almost always hate to see it and I did last night. I guess they figured they were getting the ball to start the second half-----wrong!--thanks to Baskett.

That onside kick was INTENSE, fun to watch.

Drew Brees is pretty hard to root against----seems a hellova nice guy. I am happy for him and the town. But I wanted the Colts to win in overtime.

Manning still has time to measure up to Montana’s post-season success.
Anyone who says Montana, Elway or Manning is the best of the last 30 years would get no argument from me.

Well, my main beef with Peyton and throwing him into that all time great conversation is that he's been on consistently good teams, made the playoffs practically every year and he has one Super Bowl win. For those keeping score at home, that's the same number that Eli has.

I know football is a team sport, but winning the big game was a problem that dogged Peyton all through college and was a major question going into his draft year. I don't even think Manning is the best QB of his generation.

Peyton is taking a lot of hits today, but he was plagued with killer drops that could have made the game a completely different story. I'm happy for Brees since I've always liked him, but I'm so sick of hearing, "Who Dat?!" already.

If post-season performance is the ultimate measure than Manning is not in the top 5.

But as someone said, Brady was hurt the season before last and the Pats went 11-5 without him-----(but they missed the playoffs----would have been interesting to see how far they would have gone).
I can't imagine the Colts doing that without Manning.
The year Manning won it all, they had a terrible defense.
This year they didn't have a running game (contrary to the Super Bowl performance).
I think Manning is singularly responsible for the success of his team more than any other single player on any other team.
But, yes, he probably needs a few clutch Super Bowl victories to measure up to Montana.
I'd still say if i were coaching a team and it was 3rd down or 4th down and i were planning any type of pass play and could pick any quarterback in the history of the game at his peak (ok the 25 years I've been reasonably cognizant of it) i would pick Peyton Manning.

I definitely understand where you're coming from, but why do you think Dan Marino rarely comes up in the conversation for greatest ever? It's a lack of getting it done in the big games. The level of play is just so much higher in the playoffs than it is in the regular season.

I'm less impressed with regular season records and accolades because you have to account for all the games against the bottom dwellers where you can just roll up the stats. You don't get that same opportunity in the playoffs, for the most part teams are legit.

Also, Peyton is 34. How many more Super Bowls do you really plausibly think the Colts will make before he has to hang it up? I could see him having a career as long as Favre (who I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned), but it took Favre many years in between the success with the Packers to being on another Super Bowl caliber team.

Good points about the post season.

I just think there are too many variables, coaching, the players around you, LUCK----to measure the greatness of a single player by the success of his team. It’s certainly a factor.
I personally think Elway would have had a couple of more Super Bowls if Reeves had not been his head coach.

A team can be successful enough to win it all with a mediocre QB if they have an awesome, well coached offensive line (how did the Jets get so far) and receivers and running backs who can effectively block.
They used to say a great defense beats a great offense, maybe it's not true anymore.

I truly believe that the Colts would have been 20 times more likely to win the game if they had made a reasonable attempt to move the ball in their last possession of the 1st half (with over a 1:30 left)-----even if they didn’t score, they could have given NO a much larger field with which to work.

A little too conservative---forcing pressure situations late in the game.

Is Marvin Harrison really as good as Jerry Rice?
Did Peyton Manning make Marvin look better than he is?
Did Jerry Rice create more opportunities for Montana to succeed?
That’s a toughie.
I really don’t know.

But ultimately 3 Super Bowl MVPs, spread out over a career, is fairly difficult to argue with.

Definitely good points there.

You're right about the Colts game plan really hurting them. It seemed like they were trying more not to lose than trying to go out and get the win. But I don't think you can let the Colts D off the hook for all the points they gave up in the second half. The Saints WRs were loose in the open field an awful lot.

But back to the QBs. A fair point can be made than Montana had the greatest WR to ever play the game as one of his offensive weapons. No one was better driving the field in the clutch though. I would pick Joe for the all or nothing play in a heartbeat. Peyton has come up short in the clutch a lot in his pro career (ask any Patriots fan).

It is a real personal preference argument though. I just think sometimes the players playing at the moment are prematurely put up with the greats.

I worked during the first half but enjoyed the hell out of the second. We had finally got a big screen hd/tv on Sat, so the great camera work was fully appreciated.

What struck me most, was that there were so few sacks (any?), very few penalties, and no turnovers except the Big One.

It seemed like both QBs were constantly able to drop back and drill passes to open receivers.

The onside kick and two point conversion were amazing.

The Saints defeat the Vikings to kick off the 2010 season. With Rice not being there, Favre's time off seemed to loom larger than it had in previous seasons. The lack of knowing what his receivers were doing was apparent.

I'm having a small NFL party on Sunday. I can't wait. 2 TVs with games going on as well as a pc showing another. NFL Sunday Ticket with DirecTV is football porn. I'm excited about shopping for food and drinks.
