I've had a Spotify account for years and have accumulated a number of invites.

Any of you like one now that Spotify has come to the US?

I have 13 invites and need an email address if you'd like to be invited to the free 'beta' service

OK- 9 left- anyone who pm'd me and v-rinny- if the invite doesn't send or you have any problems with it let me know

it's a pretty cool way to listen to music. You download the program (a sort of free and streaming iTunes) and depending on what music catalogues the US has been allowed it's pretty fucking awesome. You can make/save playlists, link songs to friends...

http://www.spotify.com/

I'm with delia- it's brilliant, so worth getting the premium version- but the invite allows you a free look around.

delia- what music have you got? (on the US spotify I mean)

Ok so this is my first 10 minutes of Spotify usage. So let me see if I understand this. For the first 6 months, my listening time is unlimited and then after that I can become premium? This program is incredible, I would have no problem going premium.

Yey! glad you like it... that sounds about right usage wise- I think you get quite a lot more time to use it for free (the UK has harsher caps on it, i think the free users can only listen to a song 20 times or something and then it becomes unavailable... but i mean we've had it for ages- and those caps are pretty recent).

The premium in the UK is about 8-16 dollars a month.

glad you're enjoying it! I might post a 'spotify playlist' topic... see what you folks are listening to

My only complaint is the ads (which depending on my mood can be no big deal or extremely aggravating), and the seemingly random nature of what releases are available. For example, I searched Happy Mondays and they had their 80's albums but not their Pills N Thrills album from 1990 which was one of their most popular. I also searched for New Order's Republic album and it was there but it said the artist had opted to not have this album stream, which was odd. But I would say I find about 85% of the music I'm looking for so its still amazing.

I think the US users have 6 months of unlimited listens but with adds and then after 6 months it reverts back to a basic free account.

If you want to circumvent the ads, click on your next song before the song you're listening to hits zero. Not always ideal, I know. My biggest complaint is the ad that hits in between seamless tracks (like a band jamming from one song to the next). Buzzkill. A minor complaint would be the way they date their albums, which can be convoluted when you are dealing with bands that put out records, then had their records re-released on CD or cassette, then probably re-issued a souped up version of the original CD.

Overall, I like spotify a lot. That being said, there is a 0% chance I pay for it. It's a fun service while it's free, but I'm not entirely on board with paying for streaming music (yeah, I know, this is where the market is going, but not just yet).

I'd add another complaint that the 'radio' feature is laaaaaaame. Honestly, if i select the 90's pop, hip hop and dance button- I expect MC Hammer to come up at somepoint. NOPE... ha, that's a bad example but hopefully I'm making sense... it's got slightly better of recent- but not by much.

I think that's a valid point TheOtherOne420 - took me ages to get over paying for something that's not there. The next 'big thing' (if you like) is 'cloud lockers'... the ability to pay for stuff you already own, they just store it for you so you can listen to it anywhere. As much as it took me a good while to get over the idea of streaming... I'd much rather pay for it than pay for the stuff I already have.

[probably written too much already]... but, some services [spotify included but not exclusively] are sort of merging the streaming function and the cloud storage function so that you can mix the stuff you stream (and don't own) with stuff you do (any music files stored on your computer). Which i think is a great idea if you're listening to a playlist you've made but unfortunately for legal reasons 'your'[uploaded] tracks will be unplayable if you share said playlist. So, still limited.

Humph... anyway- I've gone on for far too long Embarassed

The only reason I'd consider paying the 4.99 a month is because I am a voracious music downloader as well as a musical packrat. I keep everything even if I hate it because I'm so paranoid that I may get into it later. An example would be for a long time I didn't like Moby at all but as my musical taste evolved, he became a favorite of mine. This also happened with Elf Power, Kylie Minogue, David Bowie, and various other bands.

However, since I don't have the storage on my computer for all the music I have, nor do I have room on either of my iPods for more music (I have an 80GB and a 120GB) this is a very convenient way for me to listen to music at my computer without having to download it. I don't see myself paying for it forever, but I definitely would like it for a whole year.

And as far as the ads, I don't so much mind the Spotify ads but I can't stand the 'check out my new single' ads because its usually a terrible song that completely disrupts my zone.

Oh I forgot to agree with TheOtherOne420 on the wrong dates as well. I have a thing about dates of music. I even once had an extensive debate with a friend over whether songs from albums released in 1989 but were released as singles in 1990 should be considered 80's or 90's songs. And Spotify's dates are painful for me.

v-rinny - if you're ever curious to use it though- you have a spotify code waiting in your pm messages here.

While grooveshark is good- the quality and sound variation of the tracks drives me mental. I tend to use them for different things- spotify for full albums (as you don't have to pick through which is the good quality set of songs) and playlists and grooveshark for film soundtracks (not many that i like are available on spotify)

any of you spotify users- http://sharemyplaylists.com/ this is a pretty good playlist website

And I do agree with your statement on Grooveshark...I definitely will give Spotify a try, then! Thank you!!! Smile

Yeah, I agree on the assessment of grooveshark. I moved on pretty quickly after giving it a shot. Out of curiosity, what are some of your fav film soundtracks?

And sharemyplaylists was a godsend when I started up with spotify. Great to give me a little direction at first (I tend to spend a lot of time clicking through the Related Artists function, so I just need a starting point sometimes).

Ha... NIGHTMARE question; I mean it's a good one- but aagghh, I have to narrow it down? hahah...

It varies wildly and changes constantly... but here goes
(*said quickly and under a hushed tone* pleasedon'tjudgemebutIlovemusicals) In no particular order and by no means an extensive list:

(500)Days of Summer
A Prarie Home Companion
Eternal Sunshine...
Moulin Rouge
Easy A
Hackers
Ne Le Dis A Personne
Trainspotting
Annie
The Hours
Le Mepris
The Young Victoria
Evita
... anything by Doris Day
Le Concert
Tabarly
Amelie

OK... I'm gonna stop now- oh. not too many musicals... (if you ignore doris day!) Some of those are because I've watched the film so much (Easy A!)

How about you?
