Post subject: official White Stripes break-up |
|
|
Sad day in music. The White Stripes have this announcement on the main page of their website today:
| Quote: |
The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.
The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.
It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.
Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes’ intense and incredible career.
Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular channels.
Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly.
With that in mind the band have this to say:
“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”
Sincerely,
Meg and Jack White

Definitely a bummer, but at least Jack's still in a million other bands. _________________ "When God gave us mirrors....he had no idea...."

I like it when a band calls it a day for the right reasons. _________________ Last.FM / Tumblr |

| I like the White Stripes, but I love the Dead Weather, so I'm a little dissapointed in the official announcement, but if it means more Dead Weather, then I am all for it. |

I've been a Stripes fan since around 2000. I was actually at the Southhaven, MS show in 2007 right before Meg had her "break-down." I kinda knew they weren't going to make any new music, which saddens me...but it is what it is...
There's always the music they made...and I'm sure there will be things that just creep up that Jack had locked away...
Either way, I sport my RILO KILEY and my WHITE STRIPES stickers proudly on my jetta...and always will! _________________ I hope that I die when I'm 100 years old |

Am I a White Stripes fan? Nay. Do I like and listen to their music casually? Indeed. However, I actually don't really like when bands "officially" announce a break-up like this. It's a myriad of reasons why it annoys me. For one, I find that a large percentage of bands end up re-uniting whether its 20 years later or 5. It just seems pointless and dramatic to me to announce it. Announcing a hiatus or something is one thing but even then its like 'whats the point'? Just don't release anything. Two, I think it only unnecessarily disappoints fans. I'd rather wait 10 years hoping and hoping my fave band will release something rather than being told its dunzo. I know its weird but ehh just my preference.
Also, I call bullshit on the reasons they gave. Seriously, I have seen far too many behind the music specials (lol) where bands claim initially that they broke up amicably and give all this spiritual mumbo jumbo as to why. Then come to find later there was all kinds of bitch fits going on behind the scenes. And weren't these two married at one point? Yeah, I'm not buyin it. I mean I could be wrong but, it just seems like alot of bull. I mean, even with Rilo Kiley, if any of you think that there wasn't some drama that contributed to them not recording together after UTB then you're naive. Its kinda obvious. Most bands breakup because of each other, not the job. Money and success talks, friendship and camaraderie unfortunately don't.
Just what I gather from reading it. But hey, godspeed to The White Stripes (pun intended) and bummer to any major fans out there. _________________ Beauty fades. Dumb is forever. |

| February 2nd I had already been away from school for a week because I had a really bad phase. And it didn't really get better when I read that the Stripes had broken up. February 11th I finally got hospitalized. At least that's a good story to tell to emphasize my hardcore-fanness.. |
