Post subject: Your Hidden Treasures: Favorite Small bands (plug them here) |
|
|
Hey all, recently Im just in the mood for some music I dont know about. So as the thread implies, share the hidden bands you love. The ones that are just on the cusp of being huge, or maybe nowhere near is but deserve it.
Im not asking what youre listening to. so if you say bright eyes or anything of the sort I will reach through my screen and slap you...in a nice way.
as for me:
diane cluck (awesome awesome anti-folk)
bat for lashes (UK band, sounds like bjork mixed with awesome orchestration, theyll be big in america, by august I say)
acid house kings (indie pop, I thikn theyre BETTER than belle and sebastian)
casey dienel (if you like regina spektor, youll love casey, her songs are cute little narratives)
klima (electronic folk type music, her voice is beautiful)
not as hidden:
loney, dear (fun pop with a harshish voice, think shout out louds)
el perro del mar (yay for sweden)
jenny wilson (yay for sweden again, she sings with the knife and robyn a lot)
new buffalo (beautiful folk pop, on arts + crafts label)
frida hyvonen ( saw her last july with jens lekman, awesome awesome..grumpy frumpy strange version of tori amos)
ok im done for now. now its YOUR TURN. make me proud rilo fans..
especially you diminished self and maxticket. I know you have good taste. Gimme some bands!
ill end there..but keep it up! _________________ My office glows all night long

the late bp helium - lead guitarist for Of Montreal, but his solo music is beautiful. he's got an amazing voice and writes really great songs.
casper and the cookies - great silly pop music. but like.. they rock.
m. coast - formerly marshmallow coast. they're soo cute.
grand buffet - fucking amazing comedy rap. yeah i know that sounds lame but seriously give them a shot. and if you ever get a chance, see them live because they're so fun.
mgmt - awesome dance music.
tiger tunes - again, awesome dance music. |

cool idea scott. take all my suggestions with a grain of salt....i live in holland, but im not dutch, so i dont listen to any radio or watch tv, so i have no idea if these are well know/overplayed/etc.
the trucks - seattle all girl pop with a bit of an electronic edge. messages is totally a new favorite.
the bird and the bee - inara george's new band. girly pop. awesome voice. holy crap.
hello saferide - swedish girly singer song writery. beautiful. dancy. good stuff.
the black lips - garage rock, with a hint of stoner rock to it. good stuff.
fionn regan - irish folk. really young, i hope he goes places ala ben kweller.
jamie t - brit pop.
dan le sac VS scroobius pip - brit rap. like a british talib kweli, but with a kinda electro rock background music. _________________ sorry all for my part in any board nastiness. i just cant sit by and let anyone spread bullshit. and im tired of seeing my nasty side brought out here, so im leaving. good nite all. |

I hated them. At first, I was like, oh they're funny. But then I realised all they did was say "fuck" a lot. I enjoy that word as well, but that's not enough of a base for a novelty act trying to pass as music. Fuck. _________________ "Indeed, a pineapple is what Sennett would be if he were a fruit: it's 'kinda ugly, but kinda delicious'." |

shit I don't know how many small bands I can enlighten this crowd too. My local lo-fi scene I cling so dearly to has blown up as of late.
Uh, there's Best Friends Forever who are fantastic and adorable. They sing songs about ridiculous shit like dating Lincoln.
Bobby Birdman has probably become more known with the blow's increase in popularity, but in case you haven't already listened to him you should. He makes lo-fi music but has a crooner voice. It's fantastic, I want to make sweet sweet love to it (or him. for serious, dude's gorgeous.)
Matt and Kim. Keyboards and drums. Ridiculously poppy stuff. I hesitate to make the mates of state comparison simply because they are also a couple so they get that comparison all the time, but it kind of works.
I have no idea how popular this dude is or not, and I don't remember if he's one of the guys I've mentioned a billion times, but Casiotone for The Painfully Alone is great as well. It took me a while to really appreciate this guy. I think sometimes it take a damn good album to make you want to give they other ones a try. Anyway, the damn good album is Etiquette. Check that shit out.
Paul Baribeau. He's essentially a male counterpoint to Kimya Dawson.
yeah.
oh, and you should listen to Oh No! Oh My! if you like Loney, Dear. I don't know if it's just because I heard of them on the same day or what but I aways associate the two. _________________ the music that I want

Hayes Peebles! He's a 14 year-old NYC introspective kid singing about feeling lost in the city, naivete, and love lost. He gets constant comparisons to Conor Oberst and he's loved by Nylon magazine.

I really wanted to check out The Bird And The Bee in January, but couldn't get into the show. A CD of theirs popped up at the thirft store, but it was just a single. _________________ My username is apexsensation. But you can call me Jason if you'd like.

I'm going to take this opportunity to mention some local bands becauseeee.... they deserve it and are awesome and not as well known?
Bockman - My piano teacher and guitar teacher are both in this band. They recently played at my school (okay I have to be a bitch and mention The Hold Steady also came to my school and played for us... oh and The Drive By Truckers... yeahhhh!) Anyway, Bockman just released a new album, and it's really awesome (I'm not just saying that). Check out their myspace. They're really good musicians, and really good people. I personally like "Tied to the Moon" and "Squirrel View" the best.
Shirelle C. Limes and the Lemons - Kind of electronic / indie / music stuff? She has a really pretty voice. I think many of you would like the song "A Toast to the Month of July"
The Doxies - I've seen them live a bunch because they play around town for a lot of local events. They're really rocking. I LOVE "Touch and Go", so check that track out. It's fun.
Amsterband - Not exactly local because they're not from my town, but hey, Springfield's only a few hours away (and in the same state so whatever). I don't have any of their music but I've seen Amsterband live a bunch because they come here a lot. I think they opened for Ben Kweller when I saw him? Anyway, they just got signed onto Bloodshot records, so that's exciting.
I think they came to my school too, but I couldn't get out of chemistry to see them (blech).
Annd Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin is pretty big now, so I won't give them an introductory spiel, but they're Missourians too! From Springfield. SEE, Missouri isn't misery! entirely...
Anyway, the other bands I listen to are knowable, soo there are my contributions to this thread.
Let me know if you like any of these / want info / a sample mp3 or two..
represent... I guess?

Bishop Allen. They've done a really cool EP of the month this past year. I actually don't own any of them but I think they're making a new CD that I'll definitely get. I'm not sure who to compare them to but they're just fun rock/acoustic and they had a girl singer with a really pretty voice. My favorite song of theirs is "Butterfly Nets."

Damone is a pretty sweet band from Boston (well, waltham, actually) and I think they are pretty rockin'. Female lead vocals, some hard guitars. I like them.

i loves me some bishop allen. They're actually getting a serious following and more press through the EP a month thing. It's a pretty brilliant idea, and was also impressed with the fact that there was very little crap on it. You figure putting out 4 or 5 songs a month (except whichever was the live one) there'd be alot of rough songs or just shit they'd never record otherwise, but it's mostly quality. _________________ the music that I want
