I'm not going to quote because I don't feel like seeing who said what (sorry! no offense!), but I had to say something because all this book talk is making me more and more excited.
I think "Anna Karenina" is great. Again I have to thank my Women in Lit professor, because I don't know when I would have ever gotten around to reading it if it hadn't been assigned.
I'm also a big fan of "The Bell Jar," even if it was hard to read for me, emotionally. "Candide" on the other hand, is great because it's just so crazy. One of my friends recommended it, and I'm so glad she did. Someday I hope to actually read it in French, if I ever master the language enough.
Oh, and I just read "The Kite Runner" last month, and I'd second the recommendation for that one. I can't believe it's only fiction, not a memoir, because the story just feels so real.
But I guess what's sad is I just got back from vacation, and even though I had a few books with me, I didn't do any reading! I know I said I was about to start "Extremely Loud" the last time I posted, but I think I'm going to finish reading "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" first. I started reading it a long time ago and then got distracted. Which is really sad, because I was loving the book so much as I was reading it. |

hello, new best friend! my sig used to have a quote by him but it's now no longer as relevant for me, so i took it down. my favourite of his is The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, but Unbearable Lightness of Being is a close second.

i LOVE The Fall. i know everyone's favourite from his is The Outsider, but i felt really more connected with The Fall. so many amazing quotes in there. i'm still trying to find a copy of The First Man in my local library. currently, i'm reading Exile and The Kingdom.
thanks for the tip! |

I just finished The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, and I would highly recommend it. The way this woman works with language was beautiful, and she created some turns of phrase that absolutely floored me. "A viable dieable age" is the one that's still sticking with me. A really tragic story with a heavy atmosphere and a slow pace, but very worth it. _________________ http://www.last.fm/user/ligeres |

I loved that book! I read it while I was in India, too, which made it even more special. _________________ get into the car and you aim it at the sun, boy |

ahhhhhhh i love oscar wilde! you're in for a great read with the picture of dorian gray. have you read any of his plays? i highly recommend the importance of being earnest and an ideal husband. a clockwork orange, on the other hand, was really confusing i thought. there's a ton of slang. it's interesting...but it takes a while to figure out. or maybe i'm just stupid. |
Oh, yeah, I'm a huge Wilde fan. I actually played Cecily in my school's mini production of "Earnest," and I've read several others of his as well.
Ashamed to admit I still haven't started "A Clockwork Orange." Ugh, I'm so busy. _________________ Give love to make more, try to stay alive.

I'm reading Thomas Pynchon "V." right now...it is incredibly dense and difficult to follow, but still enthralling. I haven't been able to put it down...I would definately suggest it, but it is very taxing to read and try to understand the meaning of the story.
Has anybody read any of his other stuff? I had to read "Crying of Lot 49" for a class my freshman year of college...I hated it then but I re-read it and actually understood it and loved it. |

Has anyone else read The Thirteenth Tale? I only started it yesterday, but so far, I'm fucking in love with this book.
And I'm kind of pissed at myself...ever since reading the last Harry Potter, I'd been forcing myself to read this kind of boring book that I felt like I "should" read, but I hated it. Anyway, yesterday at work during my break I gave up on it, and I started reading The Thirteenth Tale instead, which is one of those books that I've had and been intending to read forever, and now I'm just like, fuck. What took me so long?
So I'm going back to reading now. If you don't hear from me for days, that's where I'll be. |

I read it a few weeks ago and loved it as well. It's one of those books where you get lost in its fictional world. _________________ Hi, I'm Allison |

I'm currently reading Happy Endings: Tales Of A Meaty-Breasted Zilch by comedian Jim Norton. I think he's absolutely hysterical, but I could quite possibly be the only member of this board that would enjoy this book. _________________ "When God gave us mirrors....he had no idea...."

because I'm such a fantasy whore... I'm reading the first part of the second trilogy in the Wraeththu series by Storm Constantine. I've already read the second part, The Shades of Time and Memory, which was absolutely fantastic. I finally got around to getting ahold of the first one, The Wraiths of Will and Pleasure.... her books are semi-difficult to get ahold of, hence the jumping around. I'm completely in love with this series, it's really dark and, yes, sexy. A lot of fun to read because she's one of those authors that has the ability to completely suck you into the world of her stories, which is rare and something I love, and it being such a strange world, it makes it even better. It's escapist fantasy at it's best. _________________ The quill from a buzzard, the blood writes the word, I want to know: Am I the sky or a bird?

I picked up V a couple weeks ago, but I'm not going to attack it until I'm finished with classes for the summer.
Right now I have a friend lending me all of her Neil Gaiman, which has been fun.
I mentioned her in the other books thread, but I loooove Aimee Bender. I read Willful Creatures a couple months ago and I have yet to find The Girl with the Flammable Skirt (I'm just going to order it off the internet soon). |

I read this a few weeks ago. So many people recommended it as an amazing love story, and I wanted to like it so much, but what Clare did near the end (I hope you know what I'm referring to, I don't want to spoil it just in case) just completely ruined the book for me. I don't care how anyone justifies it, I can't forgive her, and that makes me kind of mad because if I could have just known to skip the two pages or whatever that scene takes up, I think I would have really liked this book. |

I really really really need to go buy/library First Among Sequels. Like immediately. Was it excellent? I want to re-read all the Thursday Next books; I think they just get better & better. (I couldn't get into the Nursery Crime Division books, though...)

That sucks about not being able to see him! He seems like he'd be really fun. I liked First Among Sequels, but not as much as the other books. It took some time to get into, but it's definitely worth it. I think it was just strange because it takes place fourteen years later. _________________ What a fun, sexy time for you! |

I'm currently reading Shopgirl, Steve Martin's novella. Eh, it's alright. It's super short so I should be done today. I saw the movie, a friend recommended the novella but I'm not really diggin it. It's a quick read but that's about it.
Just finished Memory Keeper's Daughter. Too long. I just couldn't really get into it until the end. Because I think I just wanted it to end. _________________ "Made out with a hot dog? That was one time!" |

Nope. It's been awhile since I've settled down with a good old sword and sorcery or anything of the sort, but that's more been laziness and distraction than anything else.
