I used to buy 7 or 8 DVD's a month, back when Blockbuster were still selling them 4 for $20. And I always try to buy widescreen. But the only time I splurge on Blu-Ray is when it is heavy CGI or epic in scope.

I think the last Blu-Ray I bought was Hanna. That was only because the director definitely had a vision for that movie.

This gives me a chance to talk about The Wizard/Jenny's acting.

Not too long ago I came across a YouTube video from 2008 where they streamed The Wizard at the Alamo Drafthouse and did a Q&A. The director said he wanted to put out a special edition DVD with extras. Fred Savage and Jimmy aka California was there, too. I'm guessing this hasn't worked out since the only DVD I have ever seen is a barebones Full Screen version.

Look up the Alamo Drafthouse Q&A I mentioned.

I bet the time difference between the films has to do with Nintendo putting in SMB3 in the movie. They apparently filmed all their gaming scenes with nothing on the screens and the games were added in later - something like that - also mentioned in the Q&A.

Look up that commercial that airs on TCM about FS v WS where Martin Scorsese talks and they show scenes from Ben Hur and you see how bad Pan & Scan is.

I've read the transcript of that Q&A but it was a while back. I should go find it.

And again, I'm aware that fullscreen or pan & scan is inferior in theory. But I have seen many movies that I'm super familiar with on both widescreen and fullscreen (lots of DVD's have the option of one or the other) and for me the only difference in the experience is the black bars. They really effing annoy me. I wish they didnt because in THEORY widescreen is better. I think its because with fullscreen, the picture is bigger and widescreen shrinks the picture. And TheOtherOne420 is right, I don't care as much about cinematography to fret over pieces of the shot not being shown. I care more about the actor's performances and the storyline.

And I 100% agree with mojo about the Blu-Rays. I will only buy a Blu-Ray if its a big-budget SFX film. But indie films and older movies, I honestly don't care about picture quality. I DO care alot about sound qaulity though so a VHS may lose the battle because of that. I dunno, I'm just old school. I only technologically upgrade if the upgrade provides convenience. I started buying DVD's because of the special features. If its only a bare-bones release I'll keep my VHS until it doesn't work. I started buying CD's over cassettes because it was easier to skip songs. I got an iPod so I wouldn't have to lug CD's around. But widescreen and Blu-Ray for me don't provide convenience so I don't really care about them as much.

The reason I buy bluray for all my movies is because it always has more special features then the DVD. I can't seem to enjoy DVD as much as Bluray. I like how detailed bluray looks even for indie movies.

The funny thing about extras is that I never watch them. I buy blu-ray for the better picture quality, but 90% of the time I just watch the movie without going in for all the commentary, deleted scenes, or interviews. I hate when the magic is spoiled by explaining all the wizardry behind the scenes.

I never understood audio commentary (and by understood I mean how people can sit through it). I've tried to sit through a movie with the audio commentary and it drives me nuts. When I want to watch that particular movie, I want to watch the MOVIE. I'd rather they filmed a sit down and commentate on the movie while THEY watch the movie on a screen and then maybe intersplice scenes from the movie while there's nothing being said similar to "making of" featurettes. But to just have the movie playing while they talk over it, I dunno, it just kinda throws me off.

Back To The Future is one of my favorite film series of all time and I couldn't even sit through the audio commentary for that. I got up to the part where Doc Brown first introduces the time machine before I just turned it off.

I love the audio commentary, as long as it is with the director. I'm fascinated by how movies are made and some of the backstory on how certain scenes came to be. I'm not so much a fan of the commentaries with just the actors/actresses as they tend to be much more superficial and pointless. The major exception being the commentaries for some comedies, which can be just as funny as the movie itself. One that sticks out for me is the track for Dude Where's My Car?, where it's the two of them just getting trashy drunk and telling funny stories/cracking jokes. Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle is funny along those same lines.

That possible metaphor didn't immediately strike me, but one can only wonder what the concept was.

Would anyone be generous enough to upload the Third Man Records rip for me? I used to have it, and then lost my ipod.

Thanks in advance.
