Post subject: Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins - You Are What You Love |

| You Are What You Love wrote: |
This is no great illusion
when I'm with you I'm looking for a ghost
or invisible reasons to fall out of love
or run screaming from our home
'cause we live in a house of mirrors
we see our fears and everything's our songs, faces, and second-hand clothes
but more and more we're suffering, not nobody, not a thousand beers
will keep us from feeling so all alone
but you are what you love
and not what loves you back
that's why I'm here on your doorstep
pleading for you to take me back
and the phone is a fine invention
it allows me to talk endlessly to you
about nothing disguising my intentions
which I'm afraid my friend are wildly untrue
it's a sleight of hand, a white soul band,
the heart attacks I'm convinced I have
every morning upon waking
to you I'm a symbol or a monument
your right of passage to fulfillment
but I'm not yours for the taking
but you are what you love
and not what loves you back
so I guess that's why you keep on
calling me back
I'm fraudulent, a thief at best,
a coward who paints a bullshit canvas
things that will never happen to me
and at arm's length, it's Tim who said
I'm good at it, I've mastered it
avoiding, avoiding everything
but you are what you love Tim
not what loves you back
and I'm in love with illusions so saw me in half
I'm in love with tricks
so pull another rabbit out of your hat |
Feel free to talk about this song or make corrections in this thread. |

Do any of you fantastic people know who the "Tim" is in this song, and how he fits into the band's circle? I am really curious, mostly because this song is part of the reason why I'm with my boyfriend (also a Tim) right now.

| I don't know if it's confirmed but I believe most people think it's Tim Kasher from Cursive/The Good Life. He's a friend of Jenny's and I believe they dated briefly. |

(woo this is my first and probably will by me lest long winded post) this is by far my absolute favorite song by Jenny Lewis. In all honesty I have on and off listened to Rilo Kiley. I have seen them a few times but always liked something about them, but I didn't get the sound. It wasn't so much my cup of tea. But there was always something about them. My favorite song up to this point has always been "Pictures of Success", when I saw them the first time (which was how I was introduced to them) all I remembered was this song and another song "85" and I bought the cd and ep.
ANyhow to make a long story short, recently I have been listening to a lot of Acid Tongue and made me go back and really listen to the full Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins album instead of the four songs I normally listen to, and discovered this song again. And in the process I have found that what I always liked about Rilo Kiley was how awesome her lyrics were. Her style of writing and it is very Vegas-y vibe. So now I consider her probably my favorite song writer. And this song is the reason it hit me.
Blah blah blah.. |
