D
I had one friend in high school recently he hung himself with string
His note said
G D
"If livin' is the problem, well that's just baffling."
D
And at the wake I waited around to see my ex first love
G D
And I barely recognized her, but I knew exactly what she was thinking of
A G D
We sat quietly in the corner whispering close about loss
A G D
And I remembered why I loved her, and I asked her why I drove her off
She said
G A D
The slow fade of love
G A D
Its soft edge might cut you
G F#m7
And our poor friend, Jim
D A G
Well he just lived within
G A D
The slow fade of love

Hey, I tried this all out and listened to the song again and realized she (he? - not sure who's playing the guitar here) has the bottom E detuned to a D - it IS a slack-key tuning, albeit one of the simplest. Try it out and you'll see how great it sounds with the D droning underneath it all. You can just move the tab from 3 to 5 on that string. There's also a 3rd harmony over the little riff on D before hitting the A. I don't know how to enter tab to show you, but the slide from 5 to 7/9 on the A string is accompianied by a 4 to 5/7 on the D... Sorry if this is too obtuse and when I get a chance, I'll try to learn how to put it in Tab...

You know, with all things being equal, I prefer to play stuff in standard tuning than dropping the E string. I find a lot of tabs online that instantly rush to drop D tuning when the same thing can usually be accomplished in standard tuning. I haven't tried the tab here yet, but if you can do it without alternate tunings, I say do it.

sorry the chords didnt go in the right spot >.<
its kinda easy to figure out where the chords go with on the line
Code:
if you copy and past your correctly alligned tab (if you for example originally wrote it in a notepad), highlight it, and click "code" at the top with all the other options (bold, italic, quote, etc) then they will stay correctly alligned in your post
I may be an idiot but it's hard to line that up. Even when it is pasted in Notepad it doesn't line up. I don't know what text you made it in, but in notepad the longest line is still 7 characters from the shortest, and so it's hard to tell if you're saying play a whole D chord like so:
0
3
2
0
or to play an open on the D string and then a part D chord like so:

I saw it live this past Saturday, and it definitely is drop D.

nice job, but i saw a video clip where they play this song. believe it is open d. could somebody make a tab?
I highly doubt this song is played in open D. Open D tuning would give you WAY too much of a drone sound. Take 'The Big Guns' by JLwtWT for example. THAT is in open D. I'd have to say that I agree that it's in dropped D tunning. _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet.

Alright, you guys need to download the 1/17/04 new york gig. Jenny explains how Blake tunes the guitar. Blake also talks about it at the end of 'the good that won't come out' on the fingerprints bootleg.....

Could you provide a link to this 1/17/04 New York gig? Or can you just tell us what it says? I'd really like to know. Thanks. _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet.
This is pretty much entirely wrong except for the keys.
It definitely is in drop D and Blake uses the low E (Now in Drop D)
as a continuing bass note with his thumb, and the D formation shown
here is on the wrong part of the neck. It's not an open D,
he kinda does this half bar thing at the 7th fret (D) and mostly
stays to the right of that and then goes down a bit and holds the
D (E) at the fifth fret for a G note and then at the 7th for an A,
and the chorus is G, A, D chords with the D (E) being the root
each time.
Here's the closest shot of his hand I could find. Watch his thumb:

I want to learn this song but I can't figure out how to put my hands on the fretboard to play this easily. Can someone explain how this is accomplished? I just can't seem to get it right. Dammit. _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet.

I know it's been a while since this thread was active, but I have been haunted by this cut since I first heard it and since my first post and have not been able to find any other sites or threads that drill into this song like this thread did. I had it - almost - back then. I can't see the thread now that I've opted to post again, but whoever posted the video, thank you there is no hope of really knowing what someone does without seeing it. I am going to try to figure it out by watching that video. Also, someone posted a tab with the drop D, whihc may right, did not have time to "deconstruct" it. Will work on this over the weekend. Anyway, don't know what exactly I'll have in a few days, but I will go at this and share what I end up with one way or the other. It's absolutely on my top 10 all time songs now.
Blake is really quite an amazing guitarist - and songwriter - as this really resembles the best Hawaiian slack key. Really blows me away how unsung some folks are...
Yes I'm still very much interested in seeing more attempts at tabbing this out. I'm giving it a shot, but I think I'm still too much of an amateur to get it just right
