Post subject: The guitarists thread |
|
|
There have been so many things I've wanted to discuss about the tabs on this site but for some reason, the tabs have been ignored on this site for quite some time. I'd like to improve the tabs but it's pretty hard to do all by my lil' lonesome. There are some things I simply don't understand...such as the tab for 'The Absence of God'. It shows the chords and 28 seconds of tablature which is perfectly tabbed. I can play that perfectly. For slow and stupid people like me (I have learning disabilities) it's much better to have things as simple as they can get. All I really need for that tab is the picking patterns for each chord.
Also, the tab for spectacular views (the EOAT one). All it gives are chords. If you watch videos of Blake playing the song, he isn't playing those chords. And I can understand that people just want a simple way to play the song...I don't, however. So, if any guitarists want to help me make the tabs better, then reply to this and let's get started. _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet. |

Just because Blake doesn't look like he is playing the same chords doesn't mean he isn't playing the same chord. There are many ways to play a chord. I suggest you learn them so you can get better than the people who make these tabs you consider to be wrong. As for you comment on the Dreamworld tab, yes, Blake is playing something different. However, Pierre is playing what is tabbed.
Blake is one of the most 'epic' guitarists out there. There are generally 3-5 guitar tracks on any Rilo Kiley song. |

I was polishing my electric guitars fretboard when I noticed a small crack from the bottom of the neck up to about the 19th fret. The crack is really thin and only about an inch and a half long. Can this be repaired and if so, about how much will it cost me? _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet. |

Something is wrong with my other electric guitar...you see, all of the strings play fine but when I go to pluck the high e string, it's just gives me this metalic ugly sound. It's touching the fretboard all the way up to the 6th fret. It's put me in a really bad mood. I have no idea what happened to it. I'm going to take it in to be repaired as soon as I can.

This thread didn't turn out the way I imagined it would. Are there seriously not enough guitarists on rilokiley.net to have good discussions about guitars? I was thinking maybe we could exchange guitar tips and stuff. I guess people weren't as psyched about the idea as me. _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet. |

Is the crack on the fretboard or on the back of the neck? If it is on the fretboard it doesn't really matter and is repairable. If it is the neck itself than the neck is essentially trash. I don't think a fretboard can crack in the way you describe so I'm gussing its the neck. Unless it is an amazing guitar there is no reason to fix it.
For the buzz it kinda depends on what type of guitar you are playing.
Causes...
The nut on the high e may be cut too low
truss rod might have too much relief
neck may be curved and have too much relief
I suggest a new guitar. |

It's the fingerboard from the bottom to the 19th fret. And it IS possible for it to happen. I talked to a luthier about the problem already and it was caused because the wood was too dry. He said it's cheap and easy to repair and from now on, I should be rubbing lemon oil into the fretboard every three months or whenever I change the strings.
You can barely see the crack in it but it's just to the right of the G string. It gets thinner as it goes up so you can't really tell how far it goes. But there it is. Proof that this can indeed happen to a guitar. _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet. |

Since we are on the subject of guitars, I am in the market to buy a new one. I'm looking for an acoustic/electric. Any suggestions? So you have a guitar that you simply love and cannot live without?

I have a really nice acoustic/electric that I would suggest to everyone. It's an Ibanez AEG10E cutaway body. Here's a picture.
Out of my three acoustics, this one is my best and favorite. _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet. |

I'm kind of late here... But if you are still on the market.
I have a '62 Martin D-28 that I simply cannot live without. But if you are looking for something cheaper, I have a couple suggestions.
First of all, I highly suggest against an acoustic/electric. Buy a pickup. This pickup to be precise. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/LR-Baggs-M1-Soundhole-Pickup?sku=307117&src=3SOSWXXA
They are really great. There is nothing extra to weigh the guitar down and kill tone. If you have an acoustic/electric with the equalizer on top it just kills tone. Those guitars sound bad, they also feel weighted awkwardly.
As far as guitars go, If you want to spend 3-500 go Epiphone and one of their gibson remakes like the Dove, Hummingbird, J-200, or J-45. $600-$1000 go for a Martin. A used 000-15 would be a good choice at around $700. |

Does anyone know what kind of guitar it is that Blake would play at shows back in '03? It's red, pretty, and I desperately want one just like it. _________________ We shift eachothers body to accept the bullet. |

I am still in the market, so thanks for your input. I'm saving to buy a house so I can't quite justify buying a new guitar right now...hopefully soon after the big purchase is made. |

I play semi-professionally, and during the last year (a little less actually) I had three friends who have had their guitars stolen at gigs, and I got seriously worried about my Gibson J-160E (with an added soundhole and piezo pickup, in addition to the standard P-90 Beatles-style pickup) and I wanted something cheap that sounded decent and I could bear to lose in case of the worst. I played a lot of guitars and searched around, and ended up getting a fairly good deal on a Fender Sonoran from their new California series. It has a metallic finish, and they offer Natural, Candy Apple Red, Surf Green, Lake Placid Blue (as mine is) and Shoreline Gold. They sound remarkably good for the money, and look fantastic. An added benefit for electric players who are switching over or players with smaller hands is that they have a slimmer neck, much more like a Stratocaster neck. (Which is exactly what it looks like) I play almost exclusively acoustic, so the neck wasn't a huge deal-maker for me, but it wasn't so thin that it was a deal-breaker either. It's beefy enough to be solid and give an acoustic feel, but still thin enough that it's REALLY easy to do fast work, and even some string bends. I use fairly heavy strings, but I would think with some rather thin ones it would be incredibly easy to do string bends, if that's in your playing style.
At the very least, when you're ready to buy one, you should try one of these. Be sure you try it amplified in the store to get a feel for how it'll feel when you're playing live, but I would think that this would suit all of your needs without breaking your wallet.
I liked mine so much I ended up getting a Candy Apple Red model as well. It's extremely useful and I love them both. I keep the red model in open tuning for slide work, and use the blue for rhythm work. I can't recommend these guitars enough.
If you have any other questions about guitars or certain models or anything, let me know, and I'd be glad to help. |
