|
same thread new title
here is another list, this one from Music for America, of the 50 (well just ten so far) best progressive songs ever. they're releasing ten more each week i think. they note they are no particular order, still nice to see lots of new stuff in the first ten. i do love Digable Planets!

double yay (yay) bikini kill.
hey badbrainsmashitup they say the list is no particular order, so it's not really the number 1 song, just the first on the list. i think they are arranging them so as to supposedly flow as a playlist. |

UPDATE
here's the second ten, (great freakin' lyrics, great freakin' music, and Conor' appears):
Sage Francis - "Slow Down Gandhi"
This one has it all: from sympathy for the poor to hating on military recruiters.
Bad Religion - "New America"
Begs Americans to take a look at themselves and own up to their citizen duties.
Anti-Flag - "Power to the Peaceful"
Anti-Flag spent a considerable portion of 2005 speaking out against shady military recruitment tactics and organizing their young fans to "Opt Out" of the military's tracking of graduating high school seniors'.
Wilco and Billy Bragg - "Christ for President"
Looking at his platform for office, turns out Jesus is a progressive- according to Billy Bragg and Wilco. So there.
MC Hawking - "What we need more of is science"
This MC drops bombs using the electronic voice of Stephen Hawking, leaving craters in the logic behind "intelligent design" and new age bull. Science, observation and reason are Progressive. Misinformation is not.
Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker - "The Last Trumpet"
LB calls for a revolutionary evolution of culture in "the Last Trumpet." Possibly one of the best, most powerful concious hip-hop songs ever written.
Leftover Crack - "Super Tuesday"
On the first amendment.
"I'm only one/ This is my voice/ But you're gonna have to make a choice/ I don't care if you disagree/ 'cause this fuckin' thing/ It means the whole world to me!"
Green Day - "American Idiot"
Green Day gets a slot for being the most prominant artist to speak out against the war in turbulant times.
Antony and The Johnsons - "For Today I am A Boy"
With "For Today I am a boy," Anthony and the Johnsons cast gender roles to the wind and act the sex that feels right. Progressivism has always been about accceptance, tolerence, and freedom to be yourself.
Bright Eyes - "When the President Talks to God"
Conor Oberst asks all the right questions in this slow, humorous and powerful folk tune.
and here's the first ten, if you didn't see them before they moved the site URL:
The Coup - "Ride the fence"
Critical of "ride the fencers" (people unwilling to take definate stance on the issues), this song describes pro-active left over the moderate left of the 90s, which is part of what defines today's progressives.
The Streets - "The Irony of it All"
A sensible drug policy has always been a progressive trait. "The Irony of it All" is that the law-abiding drunk likes to beat the crap out of people, but the law-breaking pothead likes to play Playstation. Who's causes more harm?
Kanye West - Diamonds of Sierra Leone
In "Diamonds of Sierra Leone," Kanye slams the diamond industry for being inhumane, calling for a buyers boycott. Buy green, buy blue, buy local... progressives understand the big picture and are conscious of social impacts associated with lifstyles.
Bikini Kill - "Double Dare Ya."
Any song that calls for "Revolution Girl-Style NOW!" gets a spot on the Progressive Top 50.
Rufus Wainwright - "Oh, What A World"
One oblique image that rolls together sexual orientation, disenchantment,
travel-weariness, alienation, and idealism over an obsessive score.
Blue Scholars - "Motion and Movement"
This song is about making your own personal revolution, and making it stick. Revolutions are not conservative, as the National Review states, but instead they are revolutionary and leftist- duh.
Dave Matthews Band - Everybody Wake Up
DMB participated in the Vote for Change Tour which was organized with intent to influence outcome of the 2004 presidential elections in the crucial states like Ohio.
Kevin Devine - No Time Flat
A scathing attack on our nation's policies in Iraq and at home.
"You say support the troops; I do. I want them all brought back, and every building that you bombed raised from the ground... If you really go and reinstate the draft, you’ll straight away just split the country straight in half, so try arresting everyone who sends their draft cards back. I’ll be returning mine in no time flat."
The Lunachicks - Fallopian Rhapsody
About abortion.
"What about a child that is not wanted? Every week a baby is left in the garbage. And what if we just make a mistake? But its— okay if a woman is raped
Is procreation what you think we're for?
You support the death penalty
But who will support my baby and me?"
Digable Planets - Le Femme Fetal
Digable Planets released an entire album that was layered with prochoice themes and powerful arguments. Here's one song off that album. |
